Chapter Twenty-Five
Nolan was halfway to his feet, right hand reaching for his rifle, when Taiaâs words registered in his brain. The realization filled him with a sickening dread. The enemy hadnât tracked the Scimitar or unmarked skimmer-craft after they left Paradise Isle and traced their movements to this safe house. No, theyâd somehow identified him, Nolan Garrett, the man beneath the protective suit of armor, and had gone to the one place where he could feel safe.
âGet me eyes in there, now!â He spun toward the wall screen. He had to see who he was dealing with to know just how much to start worrying. And planning how to eliminate whatever was left of the problem after his buildingâs defenses tore the hostiles to shreds.
Even before he finished his order, Taia had the screen activated and displaying footage from two cameras. Both showed a live feed from the interior of the tunnelâone closer to the shaft that opened onto the rooftop, the second set nearer the heavy durasteel door leading into his armory.
Nolanâs gut clenched as he caught sight of the hostile dropping into the passage. Just one person, wearing cloakthread to mask their features. Theyâd have been invisible if not for the thermal cameras Taia had insisted on setting up along with the rest of his countermeasures.
âAny way to get an ID?â he asked. âBacktrace their movements through New Avalon?â
âWorking on it,â Taia said. âIâm tapping into external CCTV feeds around your building and applying a digital filter that will highlight any aberrations that could be the blurring effect of their cloakthread outfits. However, as weâve taken extra precautions to ensure no cameras have a direct view of the rooftop, Iâm having to cast a wide net.â
Nolanâs fists clenched. He wanted to spring into action, but the building was an hour away, on the far southern end of New Avalon. He couldnât get there in time to do anything.
All he could do was watch as Shadowspearâs killer invaded his home.
âWhatâs the status of the countermeasures?â he asked.
âAll online,â Taia said. She split the screen in half, calling up a two-dimensional blueprint of the hidden passages, with green dots to indicate the various booby traps and anti-personnel countermeasures heâd installed.
Nolan watched with growing anxiety as the figure reached the first intersection, where tunnels branched off in three directions. As heâd feared, they chose the southern tunnelâthe right oneâwithout hesitation.
âTheyâve got to know their way in,â he said, voicing his thoughts aloud. âHow the fuck is that possible?â
âUncertain.â Worry echoed in Taiaâs voice. âI erased any blueprints that showed the tunnels four years, six months, and twelve days ago, and made sure to modify all official building plans to render them invisible. I calculate a zero-point-two percent chance that they obtained the blueprints from any public archive or record.â
âThat doesnât explain how they got them,â Nolan said. âCould they have breached your system somehow?â After the Ex-Umbra mess, he had learned to be very wary of technology. Especially when going up against someone as skilled in cyberwarfare as Gamemaster had proven to be.
